GOP lawmaker compares human women to sea turtles to explain why they don’t deserve rights
As you’ve probably heard, in the next few months the Supreme Court is expected to overturn Roe v. Wade, end the national right to abortion. If this happens, the medical procedure will most likely be severely restricted or banned altogether in about half of the country. Many people are extremely upset about this because they believe, among other things, that the government should not treat 50% of the population as second-class citizens, and that pregnant women should be allowed to decide what to do with their own body, just as men can decide to, say, have a vasectomy without some elected group involved.
Yet somehow the Montana senator Steve Daines doesn’t seem to understand why anyone would complain about the catastrophic and dystopian situation that is about to hit women in the United States. In fact, Daines seems to think he’s figured out a huge “gotcha” when it comes to liberals wanting to make sure women have control over their own bodies: that “the left” cares more about the eggs of certain reptiles. and birds than eggs of human women. Seriously.
Speaking in the Senate, Daines said: “If you were to take or destroy the eggs of a sea turtle – now I said the eggs, not the hatchlings that’s also a penalty but the eggs – the Criminal penalties are severe: up to a $100,000 fine and one year in jail. Now why? Why do we have laws in place that protect sea turtle eggs or eagle eggs? Because when you destroy an egg, you kill an unborn baby sea turtle or baby eagle. Yet when it comes to an unborn human baby, rather than a sea turtle, that baby will be stripped of all protections in all 50 states, under the Democrats’ bill we will be voting on. tomorrow. Is this what leftist America wants? (Daines was referring to the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation that would codify the Constitutional right to abortion into federal law; Democrats will put it to a vote on Wednesday, when it is almost certain that it to fail at.)
Curiously, at no time in this speech lamenting that human women have too much rights over reptiles and birds, did Daines – who really loves to kill alive things – recognize that humans do not lay eggs, human embryos remain inside the mother until birth, and people are not endangered species. Nor did he go into the details of “America” which he wants, where victims of incest and rape would be forced to give birth to their abuser’s child.
