Reactions for fire protection works in Schinias
Not in the fire protection he destroys
11 environmental organizations ask the General Secretariat of Civil Protection to immediately stop the forest fire protection works in the Schinias – Marathon National Park and to cooperate with the National Park Management Agency and the Forestry Office competent. the ecological integrity of the rare ecosystem.
Environmental organizations ANIMA, Arctouros, Archelon, Hellenic Society for the Environment and Culture, Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, Hellenic ORNITHOLOGICAL Society, Society for the Protection of Prespa, Kallisto. Greenpeace, MEDASSET, WWF Greece, express their total opposition, as they claim. without plan and care for the protection of the forest ecosystem, the execution of forest fire protection works in of the Schinias National Park – Marathon on June 14 and 23, 2021 by decision of the General Secretariat for Civil Protection.
In a joint declaration, the environmental organizations specify:
âOn May 10, 2021, declared the state of special mobilization of civil protection 18 zones of Attica by decision of the Secretary General of Civil Protection and with the aim of “protecting the life and property of citizens, infrastructure, as well as the natural environment, due to the threatened risk of forest fires”. Part of the area within the limits of the municipality of Marathon is designated as a national park and is protected by European Directive 92/43 / EEC. Mostly the famous Koukounaria forest is a priority habitat (2270 * “Dunes with forests of Pinus pinea and / or Pinus pinaster”) and its protection requires specific treatment to ensure ecological integrity and regeneration of the ecosystem.
“Despite the fact that the Management Body of the Marathon of the National Park Schinias d’Ymittos and SE Attica has submitted specific proposals for soft works for fire protection purposes, in order to protect sensitive habitats, these were not taken into account by GGP during the design and performance of tasks. As the photos and data of the managing authority show, the interventions of the contractor’s machines have “Small pines have been uprooted and destroyed and all pines, regardless of their age, have been uprooted to a height of 3m.”
The organizations point out that the natural regeneration of the extremely sensitive habitat of pine cones in the sand dunes is the most important and chronic problem in the national park.
âWithout planning and without respecting the ecosystem, the intervention of subsoil deforestation machines with a destroyer prevents any natural regeneration of the pine cone, while the branching of the green branches of large trees, estimated to be 45-55 years old, raises serious problems of their future vitality and worsens the problem.
“It is undeniable that the country’s fire protection is urgently needed and a critical condition for the protection of the life and property of each of us as well as the natural environment. The main pillar of fire protection and forest fire prevention is forest area and fuel management. However, this should be done in a coordinated, timely manner, always taking into account the health of forest ecosystems, especially the rarest ones. and more susceptible to surgery. We must emphasize that protected areas are important tools for the conservation of habitats and species, but at the same time they contribute substantially to the sustainable development and prosperity of local communities and the country in general. Late interventions during the fire-fighting period, without the consent of the bodies responsible for environmental protection of the Schinias National Park and beyond the legislation in force, do not serve either protection against fires or sustainable management of important ecological areas.
»The forest fire protection works that took place inside Schinias National Park at June 14 and 23 raise serious doubts as to their legality under national and Community law and as to the power of the GATT to take similar decisions in matters of forest management (in particular protected areas) without the cooperation of the competent authorities and in violation of the law on forest protection. It should be noted that the same goes for similar operations in other protected areas, such as Sounion National Park, which is also the responsibility of the Managing Authority â.
