Yes to the Great Island of Darien, but what about Norwalk’s Manresa Island?

Governor Ned Lamont has committed to zero carbon by 2050, as has the President of the United States.
Hearst Connecticut Media reported on Darien’s decision to purchase Great Island. That’s 60 acres of priceless property. Interestingly, in Norwalk is the 144-acre Manresa Island, which has a disused power station owned by NRG, which has been available for sale since June 2013.
Norwalk did nothing to acquire this priceless property, while Darien within weeks made this momentous decision. Possibilities for Manresa Island are first a 22-acre solar facility, which could provide power to both Norwalk and Darien during escalating weather disasters.
The remaining acres are being considered for possible waterfront park, dockside marina and wetland flora and fauna conservation areas. Darien, considering how to use his 60-acre island, should take into account the effects of climate change, the commitment to zero carbon and devote as many acres as possible to a solar installation.
The elected officials of Norwalk and Darien both have responsibility for the health and safety of their residents. It is high time for us to respond to the realities of today’s world by providing tomorrow’s renewable energies to preserve our planet and our way of life.
